BOF Highlights 2/24/09
See video below
Last night’s BOF meeting had a few interesting moments and it appears that the reality of the economic crisis has settled in, at least with the BOF.
During citizen participation, Dave Richardson reiterated some points that he has made in the past and added that there are still certain aspects of the BOE manipulations of the past couple of years and their explanations that don’t ring true. He also went on to point out certain areas of the BOE budget that require review regarding growth rates in spending which includes “all other” spending, excluding personnel and tuitions which remain fairly consistent.
Mrs. Paul spoke with regard to the “rainy day” fund that she seeks and went on to reveal the potential areas of reduction of the BOE budget that the administration will be recommending to the full BOE in order to comply with the BOF 0% increase request:

Mrs. Paul spoke with regard to the “rainy day” fund that she seeks and went on to reveal the potential areas of reduction of the BOE budget that the administration will be recommending to the full BOE in order to comply with the BOF 0% increase request:
- Kindergarten
- Going to full “pay to play” sports
- Musical instruments
- 10 Teacher’s aides positions (non-grant funded)
- 7 Certified Teacher positions
So, while the teacher/aide positions may be appropriate considering the declining enrollment, it appears that rather than cuts furthest away from affecting the children as has been suggested in the past, as well as to look to identify waste, inciting the parents to revolt in order to gain support will be the first foray again this year. Not really a surprise; what administrator would recommend cuts to administration?
The most interesting comment of the evening came in a side discussion where it was revealed that Frank Baran had recently applied for the Putnam opening and was given a glowing recommendation…he didn’t get it but we almost got lucky…
