This is the best, clearest analysis I have ever read. And in my years of experience on the Woodstock BOE completely accurate and true. If education is to improve, this locked in mindset of "the education mafia" must be changed. I write this now as a director of an educational and cultural institution in Europe. This mindset is even worse over here as it is connected to romantic and failed socialist models of education, which masks greed, laziness, entitlement, and stupidity on much of the teaching staff.

Jay, are you really sure you want to bash teachers' unions in this manner. WA teachers, I believe, are also union members protected the same way that WPS teachers are protected. Actually, WA teachers are even more protected, as the WA budget *must* be accepted by the voters, while the WPS budget can be voted down.
Please don't let facts get in the way of your divisive rhetoric.

Well said Jay! While cultural conservatism has gotten a bad rap for its ties to the anti-intellectual religious fundamentalists, it would behoove the conservatives in town to posture themselves as cultural conservationists who support traditional educational rigor, accountability, reward based on merit, and intellectual discussion as opposed to the "educational mafia" mentality that supports a failed socialistic statist model that believes more money is the only answer to improved outcomes.
There seems to be a lot of name calling on this site. Not a lot of facts are readily apparent. Nice Job.
